Keeping Ajax Connected

Linda Cook

It’s fair to say we’ve all likely hit that point in the global lockdown that we’re starting to run low on creativity on how to feed and entertain ourselves and our families. I think my family blew through all of Netflix, and I do mean all of Netflix, in the first week.

So, how do you combat “I just don’t want to cook another meal” fatigue, or “No, mommy is not a jungle gym” exhaustion? By staying connected. Connected to your community.

Here’s my family’s list of fun virtual activities and available must-try culinary options that are sure to help bring that sense of community connection back.

Reading is Virtually Fundamental

The heart of Ajax’s downtown core is the Public Library. Any bookworm will tell you that books are the best — an endless source of history, humor, romance, fantasy, far away places, and dazzling worlds. Right now, in these challenging times, books are so much more. They have become a valuable tool to support our well-being.

Join the librarians at the Ajax Public Library each week for themed live events. Books for Babies and STEAM Storytime offer an online opportunity to listen to a story, sing a song, or learn a new STEAM activity.

Fall in love with Harry Potter again, or for the first time with #HarryPotterAtHome. Now available through the library in 21 languages without a waiting list! Check out an audiobook or eBook version of the first magical adventure.

Find inspiration for your next project. For a full schedule of upcoming armchair events for kids of all ages, check out the library’s calendar of events.

Discover Downtown: Take a Walk

I’m walking my dog, way more than ever before, although he’s not nearly as enthusiastic as he was a month ago when I announce that it’s time for another outing. To keep my furry companion excited I’ve been looking for new routes to travel, all the while maintaining social distancing protocols, of course. Whether your speed is briskly walking, or a lazy stroll, either are a great way to get some free Vitamin D and enjoy the signs of spring.

With that in mind, The Town of Ajax has just posted this handy trail map to help you on your neighbourhood discovery journey. You may just find a new favourite eatery that has remained open for takeout or delivery during the lockdown.

Eat Local. Drink Local.

By supporting the incredible local restaurants and businesses in our own downtown, we can all help sustain local business and our sanity! Many are now offering curbside pick up, phone in orders, or new no contact online delivery. Save your Saturday night, and try one of the downtown delights:

Pairs well with…

Falcon Brewery, Ajax’s premier craft brewery is offering free next-day delivery to Ajax/Pickering addresses with a $30 minimum order. With brews like “Bomb Girls Blonde Ale” and “Munition IPA,” Falcon Brewery pays tribute to the history of Ajax, which was the largest manufacturing site in Canada during WWII. Find your favourite beer on their website, or call the brewery at 905.686.6686.

Portly Piper is continuing to serve up their delicious array of pub fare and chef-inspired masterpieces. Open 4:00-9:00 pm daily for take-out or delivery only. Call 905-426-9535 to solve that dinner dilemma.

What a Bagel bakery is still baking up sumptuous pastries, sandwiches, and of course, bagels. Bring home some happiness with a Rainbow bagel! Every storm is followed by a rainbow after all. Curbside pickup is currently available 7 am-4 pm daily, or try their new online ordering with no contact delivery (freezer bags included).

Fill your house with the sweet smells of stewed oxtail with rice and beans: Rotilicous is serving up traditional Caribbean delights. They’re currently open for take-out only by calling 905-686-8070, or you can check them out on Facebook.

Il Fornello has joined the new national #TakeoutDay movement*. Every Wednesday Il Forenello will feature a special dish for delivery or curbside pickup. Call 905-427-1110 or pre-order via email to ajax@ilfornello.com.

Speaking of Take-Out

Have you ever tried plant take-out? No, not the meatless burger option.

While technically not part of the downtown core of Ajax, the Vandermeer Nursery is part of the heart of Ajax. This family-owned nursery has been in operation in Ajax for over 50 years and is now offering Plant Take Out. Spread some colour and joy by planting happiness in your garden. Visit Vandermeer’s online catalogue, then order by email at info@vandermeernursery.com or call (905) 427-2525 to arrange for your no contact curbside pickup or delivery.

Stay safe, keep growing, and more importantly, stay connected.

* National Takeout Day 2020 – an unofficial holiday organized by Canada Takeout – kicked off across Canada on April 15 and occurs every Wednesday after that. During this era of quarantine, the restaurant landscape is changing frequently. Always call ahead.
